The National Latino Farmers and Ranchers

NLFR has a continued and ongoing development approach to Climate Smart Agriculture with USDA as its primary partner. Each quarter, NLFR will advance the knowledge and application through the provision of TTA for accessing resources on an ongoing basis for our identified constituent base and our collaborative efforts from relationships formed with ranchers, farmers, USDA and our nineteen Quality Circle colleagues. We envision having a presence in a total of seven states, setting up staffing infrastructure development and key relationships to extend the necessary USDA support to farmers and ranchers in preparation for the new Farm Bill. We will focus on sustainability efforts as we roll out the programs in each state and look to a continued collaborative effort with the USDA.
The Biden Administration has prioritized racial equity consideration in federal policies and programs. Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging has been on the rise in the agricultural communities in the past four years or so because there is a renewed awareness that it can take time and effort for the underserved small producers to have access to resources. Historically, BIPOC, Latino farmworkers, farmers, and ranchers have experienced negative relationships with federal agencies and this has paused trust in each other before the USDA, for example, began to work together with underserved producers effectively.
The primary goal of this Project is to empower the underserved Latino farmers and ranchers to have improved understanding of and equitable participation in the full range of USDA programs and services. NLFR aims to provide outreach, mediation, capacity building, training, technical assistance, and demonstrations on best practices of water and soil conservation; inclusive of issues concerning food, agriculture, and rural development to socially disadvantaged Latino farmers and ranchers, as a National Center for Latino Agricultural Production and Effectiveness (the Center).
